A Black mother filed a claim against a school district after a teacher allegedly went on a racist rant after forgetting to sign off from a student-teacher session that had taken place on Zoom.

According to Fox 11, the mother of a Black sixth-grade student, Katura Stokes, has recently filed a legal claim against the Palmdale School District in California last week. The mother heard a racist rant that was directed at her son and the family by a teacher who had not signed off their Zoom meeting following a student-teacher session.

The teacher who was teaching at Desert Willow Fine Arts, Science and Technology Magnet Academy could be heard making negative comments pertaining to their race on the Zoom video according to the claim, which is a precursor to a lawsuit.

ABC 7 Eyewitness News reported that the former science teacher, Kimberly Newman, who resigned after the incident, was making disparaging remarks not realizing the call was still on and the mother recorded her spewing the words she said.

“I mean these parents, that’s what kind of pieces of (expletive) they are. Black. He’s Black. They’re a Black family,” she says in the recording. “Your son has learned to lie to everybody and make excuses. Cause you taught him to make excuses that nothing is his fault. This is what Black people do. This is what Black people do.”

The family’s attorney, John C. Taylor, stated, “The horrible comments the teacher made in the video are truly heartbreaking for a mother to hear and for her young son to hear. It’s unthinkable that an educator would mock and belittle this family and there is no doubt that this incident has scarred them. All children are entitled to receive an educational experience free of discrimination and this video has demonstrated what minority students often face behind the scenes today.”
